Mount Desert Island Maine
While on Mount Desert Island Maine there are many activities to do and things to see. There are a number of whale watching boats that leave Bar Harbor several times daily. The island contains over 50 miles of carriage roads built and donated to Acadia National Park by John D. Rockefeller. These roads, also called carriage trails, are for the exclusive use of horseback riding, hiking and bicycling. No motor vehicles are allowed on these roads. Additionally, there are miles of hiking trails that go all over the mountains and around all of the lakes and ponds of the island. A hiking guide that is a personal favorite is A Walk in the Park, by Tom St. Germain (Parkman Publishing). It and many books related to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park can be ordered online from A Port In A Storm Bookstore.

Downtown Bar Harbor, as well as all of the small towns on Mount Desert Island, has many shops that are perfect for browsing on those days when you feel like shopping.
Bicycles, kayaks, canoes and many sizes of boats, power and sail, can be rented in Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor.
One of our favorite family activities is whale watching. Every time we go out it is an adventure. It's always much cooler on the water than you would expect, so bring some warm jackets - even in the middle of the summer.

Photograph taken of a humpback named Witches Fin. She entertained the boat for at least one half an hour.

Every time that we have gone out whale watching, except once, we saw whales. The time that we didn't see whales, we received a refund.
